The Seasons of Senior Photos: When to Book for the Best Results

It’s your senior year. You’re picking out your graduation dress, planning prom, and counting down the days to freedom. But before you toss that cap in the air, let’s talk about one thing you absolutely don’t want to leave until the last minute: your senior photos.

If you’ve found yourself wondering “When is the best time to schedule senior pictures?”—you’re not alone. As a photographer with years of experience capturing portraits across the DFW area, I’ve seen firsthand how timing can make or break the senior photo experience.

And here’s the good news: with just a little planning, your senior session can be one of the most fun and memorable parts of your final year.

Let’s break it all down: the when, where, why, and how of booking your high school senior session, and a few questions to help you find your perfect fit.

The Seasons of Senior Photos: When to Book for the Best Results

Choosing the right season for your senior portraits is all about the vibe you’re going for—and the logistics you might not have considered.

Spring (March–May)

  • Wildflowers and green backdrops are blooming everywhere.
  • Perfect for light and airy outfits and graduation announcements.

  • Temperatures are mild, and golden-hour light is dreamy.

Summer (June–August)

  • Great for laid-back, free-spirited photos with longer daylight hours.

  • Less school = more availability to schedule.

  • Be mindful of Texas heat—early morning or evening sessions work best.

Fall (September–November)

  • Fall foliage is a fan favorite.

  • Layered outfits, cozy colors, and soft light make for timeless photos.

  • Sessions fill fast, so book early—like, real early.

Winter (December–February)

  • Unique moodier shots and fewer crowds at outdoor locations.

  • Great for last-minute seniors or studio sessions.

  • Think jackets, boots, and bold style choices.

What to Ask Yourself Before Booking Your Senior Photo Session

Not sure which season is right for you? Ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Do I want flowers, sun, or fall leaves in my photos?

  2. What’s my schedule like with school, sports, or work?

  3. Will I need these photos for yearbook deadlines or invites?

  4. What kind of outfits do I want to wear—sundresses or sweaters?

  5. What’s my dream location? Beachy, urban, rustic, or studio?

These questions help narrow down your best window—and help us plan a session that feels authentically you.

Location, Location, Location:  Most Photogenic Spots

I’m always down for a new location, however, I know all the hidden gems and iconic locations that make portraits pop. Here are a few of my favorites for senior sessions:

  • Rockledge Park/Murrell Park – stunning lakeside cliffs, golden-hour light, and rugged textures

  • Sundance Square/Cactus Garden – amazing urban feel, rustic/western charm, and un-drenched, desert vibes with bold, natural textures

  • Davis Park, Dallas – lush greenery, mature trees, a creek, and a serene atmosphere

  • Los Calinas Canals – European-inspired architecture, serene waterways, and charming bridge
  • Shoppes of Highland Park – elegant architecture, upscale storefronts, and charming walkways

  • Prairie Creek – serene waterfalls, winding trails, and lush greenery
  • Deep Ellum – vibrant murals, eclectic street art, and urban textures

  • Your school or stadium – For those nostalgic, end-of-an-era moments

We’ll pick a location that matches your style and story.
